Dongtan Net-Zero Recreation Center
Designed as an integrated environmental system, the Dongtan Recreation Center transforms recreation into an expression of sustainable performance. Set within China’s proposed Dongtan Eco-City, the net-zero energy fitness center brings architecture, structure, and building systems together—pairing a high-performance double-skin façade and perforated solar-shading envelope with geothermal conditioning, underfloor air distribution, daylighting, and living roofs. A central atrium divides the program into interconnected volumes, allowing light, movement, and visual connections to organize the building while reducing its dependence on conventional mechanical systems. Rather than treating sustainability as an addition to the architecture, the design makes environmental performance fundamental to the building’s form, envelope, and experience.
